My TransAmerican cycle trip has been long in the planning, with the first attempt in 2020 canceled due to Covid. I am flying to Portland in Oregon on 2. August and set out from Astoria on 4. August, following the Adventure Cycling Association's Trans American route. They have produced a set of detailed maps which keeps mostly away from big cities and busy highways.
The plan is to get to Yorktown, Virginia by 13. October. That's 4,200 miles with mostly camping along the way. My plan is do cover an average of 420 miles per week. I main challenges I can see at the moment is excessive heat and persistent headwind. However, by September and October, particularly the heat should not be such an issue any more.
I am also planning to start cycling at first light and get most of the distance covered whilst it's still cool.
It will be interesting to see how the TransAmerican compares to my End-to-End and back in 2020. Over 24 cycling days I covered 2,040 miles and climbed 130,000 feet. The most challenging day of that trip was probably Plymouth to Land's End at 97 miles and 9,400 feet of climbing. However heat, elevation (the Hoosier Pass is 11,539 feet / 3,517 meters high) and wind might be even more of a challenge on the TransAmerican.
