Navigation
The Trans American Bicycle Trail maps produced by the Adventure Cycling Association are very helpful and give a lot of detailed information about each section, town and place: Campsites, shops, libraries, etc.. They will be the main source of information for my day-to-day planning and navigation.
However, I have also converted the route to GPX files and imported them into the OsmAnd app, installed on both my phones. With all maps downloaded on the phones, internet access will not be needed. However, with no large cities to get through, I will probably just use the app for confirmation to check if I am on the right track.
Communication
A bit of research was needed here and I finally settled on a 90 day eSIM from Holafly with unlimited data costing $99. In addition to WhatsApp, I will use Skype for local calls and messaging, using a local number and unlimited US Skype calls. This then will allow me to call ahead to book campsites, check shop opening hours, etc..
I will also take along my Spot one-way satellite tracker. It sends out hourly location data which can be accessed here. It also has a button which alerts a control centre in case something goes badly wrong. They then alert the relevant emergency services.
Spot Satellite Tracker Setup
I am planning use the Spot to sent the Custom Message in the morning before setting out. During the day hourly positions will be uploaded and in the evening I will send a Checking Message. All this information can be viewed live here.
SOS Emergency
Custom Message: I am just leaving for the day.
Checking Message: I have arrived at today's destination.
Help Message: I have a problem, but it's NOT an emergency. I will send a cancel message once I am sorted.
Keeping it all powered up
I am taking along a small solar charger which will sit on the back panniers. This will keep my battery packs charged up. I tryed out and it works.
