  • The break lever broke but a coach bolt provided temporary fix.
  • The mirror cracked.
  • The handlebar covers wore out.
  • The chain link needed replacing.
  • One of the lugs that holds the Ortlieb handlebar case in place broke off during the flight. Again, a bit of string provided a temporary fix.

Gearing

For this trip I choose 42/32/22 chainrings for the front and an 8-speed 11/36 cassette at the back. This worked out well for climbs up to 8% or 10% for short stretches. Only once or twice did I have to get off and walk.

Throughout the trip I did a lot of going up and down through the gears and they always felt responsive and crisp.

Cleats

Partway through the trip I considered getting flat pedals but decided against it. I think it was the right choice as it ensured a consistent body geometry for cycling. So, no aches and pains.

However, the next time I will fit the SH-56 rather than the SH-51 cleats.

Tyre Pressure

Front: 44 psi and rear: 54 psi seemed to have work well. Gauge was helpful as I lost about 1 psi per week.
